According to Citrix, 42% of US organizations are considering or have moved at least half of their cloud-based workloads back to on-premises infrastructures, known as cloud repatriation. The survey revealed that 94% of respondents had been involved in a cloud repatriation project in the last three years. The main drivers for these projects were unexpected security issues, high project expectations, and failure to meet internal expectations.
IT leaders found that security concerns, unexpected costs, performance issues, compatibility problems, and service downtime were common reasons for cloud repatriation. Despite past challenges, 70% of respondents are still interested in starting new cloud projects in the future, recommending a mix of mostly cloud and some on-premises infrastructure. Security is a top concern, with 93% of IT leaders agreeing that cloud technologies can help prevent cybersecurity incidents, but there are varying experiences with security vulnerabilities among organizations.
